The Australian resume format: what employers expect in 2026

No photo, no date of birth, two or three pages, referees and a clear work-rights line. A practical guide for people new to Australia.

Many skilled professionals arrive in Australia with years of strong experience, then hear nothing back from applications. Often the problem isn't the experience but the format. Australian recruiters expect a resume that looks different from those used in much of Asia, Europe or the Middle East.

What to leave out

  • Photo, date of birth, marital status, religion, and parents' names.
  • Passport or ID numbers.
  • Full home address: suburb and state are enough.

What to include

  • Work rights: a short line such as "Permanent resident, full working rights" or your visa type.
  • A career summary of three or four lines.
  • Two to three pages for experienced professionals, with the last 10–15 years in detail.
  • Referees: two names with roles and contact details, or "Referees available on request".

Translate your experience

Recruiters may not know your previous employers. Add a few words of context ("India's third-largest infrastructure contractor") and convert project values to Australian dollars, with the original currency in brackets. If you hold, or are seeking, registration with a professional body such as Engineers Australia or AHPRA, say so clearly.

Use Australian spelling

Organise, prioritise, programme (for events), centre. Small details signal that you understand the local market.
