Salary research and negotiation in Singapore and Malaysia

Use official data to set your range, put expectations in the right place, and negotiate calmly.

Recruiters in Singapore and Malaysia usually ask for your expected salary early. A well-researched range protects you from underselling and from pricing yourself out.

Start with official data

  • Singapore: MOM reports a median gross monthly income of S$5,775 for full-time employed residents in 2025 (including employer CPF), and publishes occupation-level wages in its Occupational Wage Survey.
  • Malaysia: DOSM's Salaries & Wages Survey reported a median monthly salary of RM2,940 in 2025.

Then check recruitment-firm salary guides for your role and seniority.

Where to state expectations

In the application form or cover note, not on the resume. Give a range, and say it's negotiable depending on the overall package.

Negotiating

  • Wait for an offer before negotiating details.
  • Talk about total package: base, bonus, allowances, leave, flexibility, learning budget.
  • Be polite and specific: "Based on the scope and market data, I was hoping for around S$X."
