Learning at work: the 70-20-10 habit and where to find funding

Most learning happens on the job. Here's how to plan it, get it funded and show it on your resume.

The "70-20-10" rule of thumb says most learning comes from doing (70%), some from other people (20%) and some from formal courses (10%). It's a useful way to plan.

Plan a 90-day goal

Pick one skill linked to a role you want. Find a project where you can use it, a person to learn from, and one short course.

Funding in the region (check eligibility)

  • Singapore: SkillsFuture Credit and mid-career support.
  • Malaysia: HRD Corp-funded employer training.
  • Australia: fee-free TAFE places in priority areas; employer study assistance.
  • New Zealand: micro-credentials and employer training.
  • Philippines: TESDA programmes.
