Returning to work after a career break: show the gap with confidence
A short, honest career-break entry works better than hiding the gap. Here's how to write one.

Career breaks are common: caring for children or parents, health, study, relocation, a layoff. Recruiters see them every day. What worries them is not the gap but uncertainty. A short, honest entry removes it.
Write it as an entry
Family Caregiver (Career Break), 2020–2025. Then one or two lines showing skills you used or kept current: managing a household budget, volunteering as a school-board treasurer, completing a digital marketing certificate.
You don't owe details
Never include medical information or personal circumstances you don't want to discuss. "Career break: family responsibilities" is enough.
Show you're current
- A recent course or certificate in your field.
- Updated tools (Microsoft 365, Teams, Canva, AI assistants).
- A refreshed LinkedIn profile and photo.
Ask for what you need
In New Zealand and Australia you can request flexible working arrangements. Many returners start part-time or hybrid. Prepare your request as a business case: what you'll deliver and how.
